A studio installing several hundred bundles a year is already operating as a distributor. It buys wholesale, holds stock, and marks the material up inside a service price. A private-label line does not change that reality. It only changes who owns the label on the pack, and whether the client remembers the studio or the marketplace when she needs a top-up.
1. What a Private Label Actually Requires
Less than most stylists assume, and more than a logo. A workable launch needs a fixed specification, a thin but real stock position in one or two SKUs, packaging that survives shipping, and a reorder path that does not depend on a single shipment arriving on time. What it does not need is forty SKUs, a full colour chart, or a custom carton before the first sale.
2. Start With One Hero SKU
Choose the specification you already install most often - typically one gauge, one length and a narrow colour range - and put your label on that. A focused line is defensible on quality because you can inspect every batch of one product, and it is cheaper to hold because the capital is concentrated. Broad lines are how small brands quietly end up with dead stock.
3. Structuring the Line So It Sells Twice
- Entry SKU: a competitively priced blend that lets a first-time client try your label without committing to the premium specification.
- Hero SKU: your own gauge in your own length, the product your installations actually consume, and the one that carries the label's reputation.
- Aftercare add-on: a hold gel, wax or edge product branded to the line, so the client leaves with your name in her bathroom cabinet rather than a generic jar.
4. The Reorder Discipline That Keeps It Profitable
Set a reorder trigger on stock level rather than on a supplier's promotion, and keep one batch of each SKU aside as a reference sample. When a client complains about a batch, the reference sample tells you in one comparison whether anything changed. That single habit is what separates a label clients trust from a logo printed on a variable product.
