Instant loc crochet exists because the demand for locs is not matched by the supply of appointment hours. Hand-built loc installations are long appointments, and a salon can only sell a few per week. Ready-made loc strands installed by crochet change that ratio - and change who can afford the service.
1. How the Method Differs
In a hand-built installation, the stylist constructs the loc structure from loose fibre at each section. In instant loc crochet, the loc arrives already formed and is attached to the client's own root grid with a crochet technique. The structural work moves from the chair to the workshop, exactly as it does with pre-interlocked micro locs.
The practical consequence is that the appointment is dominated by attachment and blending rather than by construction, which is what compresses the chair-time.
2. Gauge Selection for the Client
- Fine micro gauge: highest strand count, longest attachment time, densest visual grid. Suits clients who want a refined look and are willing to maintain it.
- Mid gauge: the balance point for most 4B-4C clients, with a maintenance schedule that is realistic to keep.
- Larger gauge (0.4-0.8cm): fewer strands, faster attachment, heavier individual locs. Suits clients wanting a traditional aesthetic and a short appointment.
Gauge also sets the retightening interval, so it is a pricing decision as much as a styling one. A denser grid means longer maintenance appointments later - and the client should know that before she chooses.
3. Positioning Against Premium Hand-Built Work
Adding a fast service cannibalises a slow one only when the two are sold as the same thing at different prices. Keep them distinct in the menu: hand-built work is positioned on custom structure and a fully bespoke fit; instant loc work is positioned on turnaround, availability and predictable gauge. Clients who need speed buy speed; clients who want bespoke structure still pay for it.
4. Maintenance Is Where the Model Proves Itself
A fast installation is only valuable if the retightening cycle that follows is also manageable. Track how long each client's maintenance visit actually takes for the gauge you installed. If a gauge consistently produces maintenance appointments that outrun the price you charge for them, the gauge is wrong for your menu - not the client.
